Since I'm service packing my hair tonight...

Since I'm service packing my hair tonight.... I figure tonight is the night for patching the newly built SBS 2008.

A recent blog post reminded me that you actually can't apply a patch too soon...

And I want to make a comment on one thing he said...

  • Make sure to install Windows Server 2008 SP2 after installing SBS 2008. Some media may come with SP2 already preloaded. You can use the normal SP2 package that’s also used for Vista and the normal Server 2008
  • Do not install SBS rollup updates before completing the configuration wizard. This is extremely counter-intuitive, but is described on the Official SBS blog
  • Installing Exchange 2007 SP2 requires you to follow special considerations Here
  • Installing WSUS 3.0 SP2, which is needed to support Windows 7, is currently not recommended. I was able to do this without issues on my lab machines, but others have reported issues doing this on machines that were in production. If you’re deploying a new SBS server, this should probably be safe to go. But make sure to test functionality afterward.
  • I agree that you need Windows 2008 SP2 on the box as soon as you can.  This is one of the reasons I'm trying to track down SP2 media so that when I build the system it will already have the SP2 goodness in there.  You need it because there are some hotfixes that are needed.

I had totally forgotten about the fact that the Small Business Server update rollups require a prefix.domain.com and will fail to install if they don't.  This is going to affect me as I use a domainaccess.com for the RWW landing page.  [Long story as to why, but I've personally found it easier to train users to use https://www.domainaccess.com rather than https://remote.domain.com.  I close port 80 and use port 443 only.

At this time I'd strongly recommend not installing Exchange 2007 sp2 on your SBS 2008.  There will be a unique SBS 2008 installer coming in the works, and we really don't need anything pressing from that Service Pack at this time.  If you've read that there's more of a GUI wrapper around the popconnector, that's not the popconnector you are thinking of.  That's the popconnector for popping 'into' the server, not the Pop3 connector that we've been trying to get people to migrate off of for umpteen years.  To access that pop3 connector to pull in emails you go to the network tab, then connectivity, scroll down to the Pop 3 connector section

    Access the Pop3 connector

Click view properties and set up your pop3 connections in there.  No longer is there a global pop box (it was buggy).  You now have to set each mailbox up.

I would recommend installing WSUS 3 SP2.  You need it in particular to support Windows 7 machines.  What nailed people was that they read the instructions of the update.  It launched the first part of the screen and said to remove the old WSUS.  Don't read.  Click next.  Click until you get to the end and it wants to run a WSUS setup wizard.  Click cancel.

So let's get ready to service pack our boxes.

When I'm getting ready to service pack my hair, I wash it.  When I'm getting ready to service pack my Server, I back it up.

Now that it's backed up, download manually Windows 2008 SP2.  If you try to manually MU it, all important patches have to be installed FIRST before it will be offered up to you.

Also take this time to go into WSUS and adjust the settings.  Launch the master WSUS control in the Assessories section and open up products and classifications.

Leave the WSUS products with the selection of "all products".  This won't download all products but will merely ensure that your system will detect when new products/systems are added to the network.

In the classifications section I add Feature packs and Updates.

    So we're starting with Windows 2008 sp2  - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=656c9d4a-55ec-4972-a0d7-b1a6fedf51a7&displaylang=en

I obviously need a faster download connection :-)
