So when you build a new server

... attach any usb external drives you plan to have attached  and.... reboot it.

Yup make sure that when the box reboots that it comes back up all the way and doesn't stop due to the usb hard drive being there.  It's also the reason why I'm not bitlockering my server (regardless of the fact that the TPM chip is not included), the fact that I can't cleanly reboot when the system partition is bitlockered is why I'll be  doing encryption another way.

But truly reboot your box and make sure it reboots.

Good suggestion.  My SBS 2008 setup at home had a motherboard that would try to boot from the USB drive if attached, even when it's boot order was set to goto the primary RAID LUN first.  Quite annoying.   Fortunately, a motherboard swap was all it took to solve that problem.

Susan,

We have had a long and difficult struggle with this particular problem.

If the server hangs on a warm boot, that is a reboot, while a USB drive is connected and powered up, then there is a catch in the BIOS/firmware that is trying to initialize and boot from that drive.

Lately, Intel branded servers have had a BIOS update that puts a setting in the BIOS that allows us to disable booting via USB for _any_ device connected that way.

So, make sure that Boot From USB is disabled in the server and you should not see any problems with warm boot hangs while a USB drive is connected.

Philip
