So for those wanting to know more about Windows Foundation Server.. we installed it on a box... mind you a box that has 12 gigs of RAM.  We noted that it only saw 8 gigs which is in line with the listed hardware limitations:

  • Base: Windows Server 2008 Standard
  • X64 – Bit and 1 Socket Support Only
  • 8 GB Memory Support
  • No Virtualization Support
  • Upgrade Support to Windows Server 2008 Standard and 15 User Limitation

Windows Server 2008 Foundation limits include:

15 User Limit

50 TS Connections

50 RRAS Connections

10 TAS Connections

30 SMB Connections

1 socket systems only

8GB maximum memory support

No virtualization use right

You only get the option of clean install

This test server only had one drive

We were installing over the top of another test install so that's why the message that it's going over the top of the OS

Normal Server 2008 image based install

Normal install

As you can see, even though the box has physically 12 gigs, the server only sees 8 gigs

Even the screen saver is 'branded'.

But there's no 'console' like SBS it's just normal Windows Server 2008 with certain hardware and eula limitations.

Microsoft's Foundation Server is a way to promote the hardware vendors. Essentially, it's a full blown server hundreds of dollars less than the Windows-2003 Server.. It comes with 15 licenses, so it really is a cost savings and extra incentive for small businesses to upgrade their business servers.
