Hi Susan,

I read your piece in WS this past week and attempted to install the recommended patches. I experienced some problems on one of our XP workstations installing the Visual C++ patches.

FWIW, I had to use MSBA 2.1 to get the Visual Studio patches to stick. If you go to the Technet Security site and look up the MS09-034 patch, the download you receive is <vcredist_x86.exe> for either the Visual C++ 2005 SP1 redistributable or Visual C++ 2008 redistributable.  However, after installation (successfully) I kept getting missing update warnings from Eset Nod32, which now warns of missing system updates.

I tried everything I could think of to make sure that I had the right updates and that they were installing correctly to no avail. As a last resort, I downloaded and installed MSBA 2.1. It identified the missing patches (same as Eset) and led me to two different individual downloads for VS 2005 and 2008. The file names were :

atl90sp1-kb973924-x86_80b879911be205de69d7c59ea97f8169ff7b882e.exe

- and -

atl80sp1-kb973923-x86_4d50cba4f1476d9e9320d5c0dc2be56259a98303.exe

I could not find a link to these files anywhere on MS sites (probably just my ignorance). I thought you might like to know about my experience.

Best regards,

Bill Devlin

Sorry, I meant the MS09-035 security bulletin in my last comment.
