I find the IBM versus Microsoft debate fun. A little competition is good. Let's face it SBS 2008 has a lot of competition these days. From SBS 2003, from hosted solutions, from Windows Foundation Server, from Windows Home Server and now IBM it's looking to be some fun times ahead to see what shakes out.
Now in regards to the original press release from IBM that says Partners are dissatisfied from their inability to add solutions and services, I'm not buying that. SBS 2008 premium edition in particular gives you lots of ability to build solutions with HyperV, SQL and virtualization.
Point one for IBM for having a solution that doesn't have to deal with Patch Tuesday and worrying about the fallout of that, let's be honest.
Point one for Microsoft for having a solution that I'm going to call that counters the "hit by a bus" effect.
As a business owner I pick solutions that are supported by my vendors. I pick a solution that's in the "sweet spot" of support. I pick solutions that I'm not having to scramble to find solutions. When I moved from Novell to Microsoft, I did so because I saw that my choices for consultants supporting Novell was going down. As a business owner I like the fact that there are enough solution providers, enough options, enough technological options that a few consultants, vendors and applications can be hit by a bus and I can choose another option.
From John Head "I think Lotus Foundations is a great competition to Microsoft Small Business Server, but the weakness of IBM's absence in the SMB market will make this a slow growth."
