A fellow MVP is obviously in attendance at a Conference that the headline for one session caught my eye.

Oh please.  While cloud computing can be perfect for SOME SMB companies, to say that there is No risk?  Give me a break.  There is always risk.  Life is full of risk.  The issue is that you have to mitigate risk.

Risk of internet connection speeds being non optimal.  Risk of not having line of business apps that are optimized for it.

Nothing is without risk, on premise solutions are not without risk and cloud hype is certainly not without risk.

Name a cloud vendor with 99.999% reliability in the past 365 days.  Amazon nor google nor MS can provide it, nor can show proof that they can provide it.

Neither can hardware companies for that matter.  In the physical hardware world though, you have warranties to replace hardware that dies, and you can have contracts that require the company provide an express replacement within a short amount of time to help reduce a loss of business continuity.

In the cloud computing world, you have SLA's (Service Level Agreements).  If the company claims 99.999% uptime, they have to compensate you for lost work due to outages if it's written in your SLA contract.

The problem with cloud computing is that there are too many hops between you and your data.  You need hardware to access the cloud, but you don't need the cloud to access your hardware.  If you store your data on local hardware, it's closer to you and there are less things that can go wrong in-between.

I agree.  All of my clients' on-premise Servers on average record 98-99% uptime.  Can "The Cloud" do that?  If the Internet goes down at my clients' site they can still get to their apps and LOB apps.
