BTW the reason that the server survived is due to this:

Error message when you install the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 on a computer that is running Windows SharePoint Services 2.0: "A Web Part or Web Form Control on this Web Part Page cannot be displayed or imported":

I had no web parts on that Sharepoint v2 on my SBS 2003.  If I had, the resolution is not satisfying to me (and in fact I'm asking folks about what should we do if we are in this pickle).  So bottom line be prepared, understand the side effects of some of these .NET and have a good backup.

I'm no expert, but aren't Web parts used extensively on Companyweb out of the box?  If so, isn't this sort of a major problem?  Yet the article is nearly a year old and I'd never heard of the issue before.
