AVG and impact on Internet connectivity

So in a case of lousy timing, AVG messed up an upgrade that blocks internet access on some machines.  But it's not 'just' internet access, it's also many things that use the Internet.  so it blocks POP connections as well.

If you deployed MS08-067 security patch and then started seeing issues, it's not an issue with the patch, rather it may be an issue with AVG.

In case that some components are inactive or you are experiencing blocked internet connection after the last AVG 8.0 program update (8.0.196), please try to restart your computer. If the issue persists even after the restart, proceed as follows in order to resolve this issue:

download the archive from the link below to your hard drive and extract it
fixfiles.zip

http://gappa2.grisoft.cz/support/fixfiles.zip
run the "fixfiles.exe" utility
restart your computer
In case the issue still persists, please perform repair installation of your AVG as described in FAQ #948.

If the issue persists even after performing a repair installation, please contact us using the "Get Help Online" option in AVG.

I got bit by the AVG "Freakout" last night. A client with SBS 2003 STD. SP2/AVG SBS Edition. It took out Internet access on the server only and Monitoring & Reporting. All Clients 25 had no problems at all just the server. I ran the Fixfliles.exe utility but the problem remained. I then removed AVG from the server / restarted and reinstalled and got Internet and Monitoring/Reporting back.

The strange thing was it dismounted the Exchange Information store after the reboot. I Remounted the store and everything is functioning normally

I got hit, too and did not suspect AVG. Serveral MS security updates were done at the same time as the AVG update and I was thinking it had to be one of them. Wasn't MS this time!

Hi,

Mine appears to have done much more damage.  Using Vista 64bit the PC got slower and slower and I decided to reboot  as there did not appear to be any unduly heavy CPU/Memory running. Failed to reboot with the error message: registry file failure,registry cannot load the hive\systemroot\system32\config\software Windows repair on the CD crashes with a page fault in non paged error message. Have installed all MS updates last week with no problems but suspect the AVG Anti-Virus updates may have caused the problem - only thing that auto updates on my machine. Any solutions would be appreciated.

Have managed to connect my hard drive to laptop and reinstall the "OLD" registry settings.  Restarted the machine and dowloaded the newest version of AVG.  Stopped my internet connection and then on reboot exactly the same problem.  Corrupt registry.

Will try again later, this time uninstalling AVG.  Have contacted their support as have the Pro version of AVG 8.
