Do you ever read a license agreement? No offense.

On Apples website you can deauthorize all your computers and then reauthorize your current Computers one by one.

Before you get rid of a computer, you should deauthorise it.  Didn't you know?

Just be glad you didn't use the other monopoly's software.  Have you ever tried moving purchased WMA files to another computer?  What a nightmare!

If you don't have the old laptop anymore, the only option you have it to "Deauthorize all computers" and then you can authorize this and other computers.  It's not the greatest of systems, but it only takes a minute and doesn't require phone calls and arguing with Walmart support because you purchased the music and a new laptop.

... And, putting aside a prior computer's crash and wipe, YOU as an IT professional should have un-authorized your old laptop. Simple fix: expire all pc's on your iTunes account and re-with the ones you need. See how simple they make it

It's really quite simple.

If you don't like it, don't use it.

This type of practice (or shoddy implementation - take your pick) is one reason why I don't use iPods or iPhones. Ditto with the dongle-enforced software licensing. Because at the end of the day there are always legitimate edge cases where it doesn't work and you're screwed.

Unfortunately we're seeing more and more of this, especially now the telcos are in on the act and want you in their walled garden. Compuserve/AOL all over again...

I agree that if you don't like it, you shouldn't use it.  That's why I have a Zune instead.  All my music is DRM-free, either ripped from CDs I own, or purchased MP3s from Amazon.

My niece has had 6 iPods fail on her.  I asked her why she keeps buying them, and her answer is 2000 DRM-protected songs from iTunes.  IMO forcing her to keep buying iPods to have access to her music is the classic example of an abusive monopoly.  Lesson learned.

I think that Zune is one of the best technology products to come out in recent years.
