Does it matter anymore?
does SBS 2008 matter? not a bit. « smb|heckler:

As I sit here two days later still waiting for my beta of Hosted Microsoft Exchange to be fulfilled (and btw I do wish we can customize the domain because the current practice of adding a "1" behind the domain name you put there for provisioning is not what I'd like in a domain name), that's an interesting post to read, isn't it.
So is anyone doing anything serious not doing it on an on premise platform anymore? I don't think the answer is as cut and dried as this. Maybe this blogger has clients that trust the cloud but I can count on one hand the number of clients I have on hosted Quickbooks and I need to take my shoes off and borrow some more toes and fingers to count the clients that want their Quickbooks on their server.
But to say that it's no longer a serious platform. I think the hosted stuff isn't quite ready/robust enough yet. We're still seeing the folks shift seats on the bus for a year or two. Add to that my increasing concern that no browser short of Lynx or a web browser sandbox/appliance and I'm wanting these vendors to get their act together before I trust them with my assets, thank you very much. I see way too much of the risk analysis done by banks. stores and other businesses that are required to be secure via PCI and what not and I'm not thrilled about some of their decision making processes. At the end of the day they answer to the New York Stock Exchange and the stock price. At the end of the day I answer to my firm and our clients. There's a big difference in that responsibility and risk decision making that occurs in my opinion. And until I'm more comfy in the risk and threat modeling these cloud firms are doing (including even Microsoft), the Carnival ride I'm on right now and looking to get on next year when the hardware gets to that age when my religious beliefs kick in and I don't want to put old Operating systems on new hardware is still the one I'm in line to buy a ticket for.
Make no mistake SBS 2008 won't be for everyone. I've said this before it will not be a knee jerk upgrade that we're all rushing to do. Nor frankly, is any upgrade these days. In this economy "it's the hardware, stupid" to borrow a phrase.
But I'm still serious. Yeah it's food for thought.. but that cloud ain't ready yet. Sorry.
