This post reminded me of an email I got today (I won't name names) about a guy who followed a blog who saw that he was complaining about UAC and found it so annoying that he turned it off.  So the guy pinged him on the blog and said basically "Hey, do you realize that you can make it silently elevate instead?" The blogger didn't and searched and found how to edit it to silently elevate rather than to shut it off completely.

As he put it, changing the security of the Internet, one little step at a time.

I have a MacMini.  I have a Vista.  Due to the fact that I see a UAC every time I install software updates on it (every month), I see it's version of UAC about the same amount of time I see it on my Vista workstation.. about once a month.. and during software updating.  Even when I'm in my adminy kind of mode and doing stuff on a system so that UAC pops up, all it does is remind me that I'm an administrator now. 

I know that they say Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus but I swear I must be from Pluto or something when it comes to UAC.  Because in all the betas I have running where I'm tweaking this and doing that I still don't find it the annoying thing that would make me want to shut it off.  Because when I do see it, it's the little reminder that I should be careful now, I'm being an admin now, and to mind my manners.

Security is always a trade off, and we can't go back to a Win98 world.  Every operating system out there in the marketplace today has it's risks. http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1655 and the sooner we get off of this OS war kick, the better off we all are.
