If for the last few days the speed of the blog totally sucked...that was why.  I was testing out an online backup solution.  
And while it may make sense for incremental files, and normal workloads, If you are attempting to pull over a 5 gig clump 
of a backup of a SQL database it makes no sense at all.  It was taking DAYS to backup that clump.  Obviously one needs 
to do a SQL aware backup or something, but even still, while flat "normal" file backups may make sense online, not sure if
every file backup does.
One locally attached USB later and we have what was taking DAYS to backup, now backed up in minutes

With the CORRECT solution online backups work just fine. Junk like IDrive and Mozy do not do what they say or are very clumsy at doing it.

Block Level, Open File Support via VSS, Congestion aware bandwidth use, Exchange and SQL aware (Hot), and data compression are just some of the things to look for in a proper online backup solution. Hey got a 50 GB database you want to upload well we can even send that via USB drive to the Data Center to have it copied over then you start syncing your backup to it.

I have been reading about the online backup industry for a while now. Online backup is maturing and slowly getting the attention of the general consumer. One website worth mentioning is the backup review site:

The first bacup has to be done over a weekend. Start it at end of day on Friday and let it run all weekend. It'll be done sometime Monday. After that, the delta changes go quickly. That first backup is always a pain though.

Sometimes, the first backup should be done over a transit van filled to the gills with physical media. Just like Microsoft's introduction of the "sync by media" option to Active Directory, allowing branch offices to get DCs up to date without having to use up all the bandwidth available over your WAN.

TCP/IP over Avian Carriers makes more and more sense every day.

As per the above comments - never underestimate the bandwidth of sneakernet or vehiclenet.

You should also only use online backup when the recovery time objective (RTO) is high. Online backup is fine for a handful of files, but when the RTO is low, you're not necessarily going to get the whole dataset back in time.

It would be really nice to have bandwidth on demand capability at a price point that makes it viable for SMBs. This would help reduce ETRs when recovering from an online store.

We're a small business and use AmeriVault. We found that many small businesses are adopting backup services that also provide onsite hardware that stage the backup locally for fast recovery, then send the backup data over the net to a remote site vault. Services such as Mozy and Carbonite are designed for individual or consumer backup while services such as Amerivault are more relevant for a small or medium size business. SMB-focused backup service companies typically use software from Asigra which is then loaded onto a staged backup server at the small/medium business site and the backup data is then transmitted over the wire in compressed and de-duplicated format (for performance and cost reasons) back to the offsite storage vault at Amerivault. I would say this is too much protection for the consumer, but a business will typically desire this ability to recovery quickly as a result of the staged backup.
