The buzz at SMBnation ..part two
Stay tuned for a quite geeky post that I'll probably be finishing up tomorrow night about the other big "buzz" at SMBnation. You know how when someone or something isn't at an event you talk about that thing even more? Well that's what the case was with Windows Home Server. it wasn't featured at SMBnation, but the amount of hallway talks about it, the midnight demos that took place in various hotel rooms, and just the overall buzz about a product that wasn't launched at SMBnation, wasn't showcased at SMBnation, but yet managed to be talked about enough at SMBnation.
What 'is' Windows Home server? Well yeah... it's what it sounds like.. A home server that makes it easy to share photos, have remote connectivity and ensure all your home PCs are backed up....but hang on... there's more that it can do. As Grey calls it... it does "PFM" on backup. The single instance storage it does .... just PFM. Wayne said he's backing up about 500 gigs of data on his desktops in about 100 gigs of space because of the single instance storage it can do.
I'm glad to see a product like this come into the marketplace because there's a need for a peer server product under SBS. And then most of the guys (uh, sorry and gals) were saying that when they bring in a SBS box they end up with the owner saying "Gee, can I do the same thing at home?" and up until now the Consultant didn't want to put in a SBS at home because they didn't want the overhead of Exchange and what not...but this is a small box... a streamlined NAS for the home. And it's really nice that it's so insistent on good passwords.. so that we'll get the same good practices at home that we should be doing at the office.
And as a hint of what I'm going to blog about tomorrow... I think I found a reason why you'll want to install Windows 2003 sp2 on your SBS 2003 box. ;-)

Just kinda start to think about what happens when you get two products that are cousins and the possibility of what can happen with they can sit side by side .....remember one is a peer server, one is a domain.... but remember the old saying? "Opposites attract".... just start thinkin' of the possibilities of that combo..... :-)
P.S. It's out of stock at Buy.com

P.S.S. oh yeah... one is a DHCP server... and the other expects a router to be a DHCP server ;-)
