Thoughts of UPS

Okay so maybe I didn't have such a bad day after all.... Watching the impact of the thunderstorms in Chicago, I left O'hare at 1:40 p.m. and we went a bit south to go around a Thunderstorm and it was a little turbulant flying out of Chicago, but not bad and I wasn't stranded at the airport yesterday.  I'm not sure what time O'hare closed down, but I got out before it did.

Which reminds me... have you tested your UPS lately? To see if your server ....even your home one would gracefully shut down and not crash the box?

When's the last time you pulled the cable to see how well that system stays up on that ups?

Have you tested that lately?

My UPS got a full drain test back in December when the Puget Sound area had a nasty wind storm.

Proper testing for business continuity would dictate you test it at least once a year.  I should be good until the fall, but even a small organization should runs some tests and drills periodically including relatively minor issues like power loss at the "datacenter".

There's a dilemma in testing a UPS, isn't there. I used to test mine regularly, then one day I found out it was broken - the effect was that I caused the very problem I was trying to avoid: disruptive shutdown of the server. Luckily I got away with it. However, I would advise people not to test their UPS on a running server. Boot it up into the BIOS screen or something then test the UPS - that way if the power fails you'll not risk losing anything or currupting any data.

We test UPSes every afternoon during rainy season.
