The biggest thing at New Orleans.. was not the throwing of the beads...but StorageCraft and Mark Crall

...oh yeah sure the folks loved throwing the beads off of the balcony and all that but the thing that really made a lot of people go ooooh and ahhhh was Mark Crall. No he wasn't getting beads thrown at him, but rather demo'ing for real LIVE and on stage a restore from backup to dissimilar hardware.

He took a backup image he had done of a server, he then fired up virtual pc and restored the backed up "real" server to a virtual one and flagging the "check for hardware changes and deal with it automatically" function that the IT pro version does.  Very impressive and very cool.  You can even mount the image and browse a read only version of the server if you need to extract data or what not.

Check it out... very cool.

Backup Exec System Recovery (Live State Recovery) has had this feature for 3+ years?

Indy - yes that may be so but BE is now part of Symantec (Puke, gag, spit, cough, cough!) and from the looks of this thing the way it works is great and the price is right.

Backup Exec requires the software be installed on the system first and it's tied to a single system. Susan, that software is very cool and the demonstration in New Orleans was awesome, but $3,500 per year!!?!!! That is certainly priced out of my range as a sole-prop for the use I'd get out of it. Perhaps for a large shop with lots of clients...
