SVChost and flipping back to Windows Update

PLEASE DO NOT DISABLE UPDATES - SEE THIS UPDATED POST FOR THE FIX
http://msmvps.com/blogs/bradley/archive/2007/05/05/get-your-svchost-fix-folks.aspx

The ultimate fix at this time to fix the SVChost.exe issue is to flip back to Windows Update

1. On the Microsoft Update site, click Change Settings.
2. Scroll down the page, click to select the Disable Microsoft Update
software and let me use Windows Update only check box, and then click
Apply changes now.
3. You receive the following message:
Windows Automatic Updates will not be able to deliver updates from
Microsoft Update Service.

Are you sure you want to continue?
Click Yes.

Yup. That's what I've been doing. I've seen several client PCs that were a mess as a result of Microsoft Update. A whole bunch of services fail, with no apparent way to get them running again. Ten seconds to turn off Microsoft Update and a reboot and, bingo, everything's perfect again.

I HATE this, because I spent two years TURNING ON Microsoft Update on every PC I ran into.

I'm in the same boat, it's been turned on on just about all PC's we manage.  Would there be anyone way of making this change via GP or Login script ?

You can try http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916089 but it didn't work for me. So, "turn off automatic updates" from Control Panel / Automatic Updates. THAT works!
