All those Ipod users got this...

Gotta give the Mac folks credit.. in the inbox of all those Ipod users is this email:  One caveat is that Fresno doesn't have one of those cool Mac Stores with the Geek Genius bar and all that.

Subject: Upgrading to Vista? Think Mac.

Go beyond Vista.

It's time to get a Mac. If you're thinking of upgrading to Vista, you'll probably need a new computer. Why not get a Mac? It's simpler, more secure, and way more fun. And it works with the stuff you already have, like printers and cameras. So before you upgrade anything, you owe it to yourself to check out a Mac.

See all the reasons why you'll love a Mac. Which Mac are you. Test-drive a Mac at the Apple Store.

I love these super biased ads apple has been putting out, if you've bought a computer since 2000 you probably won't need to upgrade(oh you might have to buy a little more RAM boohoo). Yeah all your stuff works already on a mac! Have fun rebuying all your software and hardware that you'll find out isn't mac compatible.

I have to wonder about comment #2 from Tom. I did make a trip to both Circuit City and CompUSA , looking at upgrading my son's desktop to Vista . The machine is almost three years old, AMD 64 with 2GB RAM, and high-end graphics card (WOW seemed to require this). He assembled all of this himself, and the machine rocks right along, in both our opinions (and his fellow gamers').

The techs at both stores told him he would need to upgrade the graphics card and probably install different RAM. Not update the drivers, but a new card. No guarantees that Vista will run as quickly as XP, even with those upgrades, not to mention drivers for peripherals.

What are we going to do? Rather than spend that money on Vista and new supporting hardware, he intends to wait for a little while and then buy a new Mac instead. Sitting side by side, the Mac just seems to make more sense.

#3-

Don't be such a sucker. When your car makes a funny noise, do you take it to a car salesman and ask if you need a new car? C'mon, I mean "different RAM"? Your RAM must be in metric.

Based on your description of your son's computer, you'll almost certainly be fine running Vista. MS has a free tool that will evaluate your machine and tell you whether you'll need an upgrade.

Your arguments just don't make sense. Your existing hardware is far more likely to work with Vista than OS X. Same deal with your software - your son likes games? I hope he doesn't like anything besides WoW, b/c it's probably not out for Mac.

Don't get me wrong, Apple makes some nice machines, and OS X is great. (I'm writing this on a Macbook Pro 17.) But don't make the jump with your eyes wide shut...

His PC is fine. Does the graphics card have 128 meg dedicated RAM? Great get Aero, if not, it will still run fine without the eye candy!
