So what is QBObjproxy.dll anyway?  On machines running Quickbooks and IE 7 or Vista every now and then on web sites I get a "this web site needs to run this DLL from Quickbooks" and I'm like, HUH?

http://208.39.45.21/messageview.aspx?catid=7&threadid=3367&enterthread=y

http://www.google.com/search?q=QBObjproxy.dll&hl=en&lr=&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2006-13,GGLG:en&sa=N&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&tab=gw

And it's obviously from reading the threads that removing it breaks things...but why does launching certain pages trigger it?  Not sure.....hmmmm...Prob should launch one of those shiny new sysinternal process explorer tools and see what it's doing.

Being nice...on an R2 Friday (that's an inside joke for some), that is also near the Christian holiday season and the start of Hanukkah, we all need to step back and say life it too short to be taking some of this stuff quite so seriously.

How about we say a kind word or too?  Sit on an email and don't send it just yet.

But how about we all agree that life is too short for some of this and just relax.

(yeah... I'm filing this under 'rants')

Review of New QuickBooks Releases

Most Recent Releases. Here are release notes on four recent releases to current Windows desktop versions of QuickBooks:

While all of these updates touch on the issues of IE7 and Windows Vista as outlined above, they also address miscellaneous issues. In particular, QuickBooks 2007 R4 is especially important, as it addresses over 20 issues including the behavior of QuickBooks 2007 in a networked or multi-user installation. Specifically it improves the security around access of the QuickBooks files. See the link above for more information.

Note: Intuit uses the term multi-user environment to include networked installations, regardless of the number of users.

UPDATE on Windows Vista and QuickBooks Financial Software

Windows Vista to Be More Broadly Released in January 2007. As widely reported in the industry press, Windows Vista was shipped to large corporate users several weeks ago and is expected to be released more broadly through retail and other outlets by the end of January.

You Do Not Need Windows Vista to Run QuickBooks 2007. QuickBooks 2007 and Enterprise Solutions 7.0 do not require Windows Vista to operate. QuickBooks 2007 runs on Windows Vista, Windows XP (SP2 or later strongly recommended), and Windows 2000 SP3 or later (SP4 or later strongly recommended). (See other system requirements here.) Even if you receive QuickBooks files from a client running Windows Vista, you will be able to use your current operating system as long as it supports QuickBooks 2007.

QuickBooks 2006 and Earlier Are Not Supported on Windows Vista. This is the rub for QuickBooks ProAdvisors trying to balance their desire to take advantage of Windows Vista and continue to support existing clients on prior versions of QuickBooks.

Wait Until after Tax Time? Note that Intuit's tax software divisions are recommending that their users wait until after tax season to make any move to Windows Vista. These notices are posted for both Lacerte Professional Tax Software and ProSeries Professional Tax Software.

Prudence Suggested for QuickBooks Users Too. Windows Vista holds much promise for significant improvements in security and functionality. However, Intuit suggests the decision to upgrade to Windows Vista be approached carefully, for two reasons:

  • Potential reliability issues often associated with the initial release of operating systems.
  • Intuit will not be able to support QuickBooks 2006 and earlier on Windows Vista.

Decisions for You as to Windows Vista

If You Maintain Multiple Versions of QuickBooks. Many QuickBooks ProAdvisors maintain multiple versions of QuickBooks software to support clients who are on different update cycles. If this describes you, we realize that the introduction of Windows Vista creates additional challenges for you, especially if you want to start using Windows Vista soon. This is because only QuickBooks 2007 (and related products) works with Windows Vista.

You Do Not Need Windows Vista Even if Clients Use It. Company files prepared by clients who may choose to use Windows Vista and QuickBooks 2007 are still fully available to you through QuickBooks 2007 run on earlier versions of Windows. (Specifically, pre-Vista operating systems for QuickBooks 2007 include Windows 2000 SP3 or later [SP4 or later strongly recommended] or Windows XP [SP2 or later strongly recommended].)

QuickBooks 2006 and Earlier. QuickBooks 2006 and prior versions were developed on pre-Vista technology and will not run properly on Windows Vista.

Third Party Solutions. Intuit is looking at the third party solutions that Microsoft has suggested could be used to deal with issues of backwards compatibility. These solutions attempt to emulate the earlier Windows environments. However, Intuit is still testing these solutions and is not yet ready to give on a stamp of approval. Microsoft discusses many issues relating to Windows Vista migration here.

Two-Machine Approach. This means that as of today, if you want to begin using Windows Vista in 2007 and still support client on earlier versions of QuickBooks, the only viable recommendation is to maintain one computer for pre-2007 QuickBooks files on Windows XP or Windows 2000 and keep QuickBooks 2007 clients on the Windows Vista machine. We recognize that this approach may note be feasible for some ProAdvisors.

Stay Tuned. Intuit will soon be announcing more Web-based resources on Windows Vista for you and your clients. And we hope to be able to respond definitively on the usability of third-party solutions.

Advising Clients on Windows Vista and QuickBooks Financial Software

Installing Windows Vista or Purchasing New Computer Pre-Installed with Windows Vista. Currently the most important advice to clients is that if they replace their operating system with Windows Vista, or if they replace their current computers with new computers running on Windows Vista, they should upgrade to QuickBooks 2007.

Currently the only existing alternative is the one noted above: To run separate computers (one for Windows Vista and one for the pre-Vista operating system). With a dual system approach, the prior versions of QuickBooks will remain supported on a pre-Vista operating system, while other applications are run in the Windows Vista environment.

Counsel Prudence Going Forward. We recommend that you counsel your clients to move forward with Windows Vista prudently and with the full knowledge that if they upgrade to Windows Vista, they will also need to upgrade to QuickBooks 2007, if they have not already done so.

Again, we are also hopeful that soon we can report back definitively on whether third party solutions would allow prior year versions of QuickBooks to run on Windows Vista.

New Releases Help with Internet Explorer 7

Updates to recent versions of QuickBooks improve handling of both Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) and Windows Vista -- at various levels. Detail follows, with Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) covered first because it has a greater immediate impact. PLUS we identify how these developments are likely to affect your clients.

UPDATE on IE7 and QuickBooks Financial Software

The following QuickBooks financial software products will now work with Internet Explorer 7.

  • QuickBooks 2007 and QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 7.0 was okay with R1 but update to R4 recommended*
  • QuickBooks 2006 and QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 6.0 update to R7 required and to R9 recommended
  • QuickBooks 2005 and QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 5.0 update to R9 required.
  • QuickBooks Online Edition
  • QuickBooks Point of Sale versions 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0

* We expect this release to be released as an Automatic Update on December 21. It is currently available as a manual download.

Note that unless otherwise noted, when we say "QuickBooks" we are talking about the Windows desktop (or laptop) versions of QuickBooks financial software, including Simple Start, Basic (last produced in 2005), Pro, and Premier. We also identify the corresponding version of Enterprise Solutions.

New QuickBooks 2004 R11 Improves Messaging. QuickBooks 2004 will not work with IE7 but the recent release will improve the error messaging relating to IE7 detection. You will now be able to dismiss permanently the message that warns you that IE7 is not compatible with QuickBooks 2004. However, there still will be problems when running IE7 with QuickBooks 2004.

Here's more information on what is affected in QuickBooks 2004 by IE7.

  • QuickBooks 2004 and QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 4.0 update to R11 recommended

We know that until these updates were released, some clients on QuickBooks 2005 and 2006 experienced difficulties with Internet Explorer 7. We know these problems will persist for users of QuickBooks 2004. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Decisions for You on IE7

If You Maintain Multiple Versions of QuickBooks. Many QuickBooks ProAdvisors maintain multiple versions of QuickBooks software to support clients who are on different update cycles. If this describes you and you are currently using QuickBooks 2004 or older versions, or QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 4.0 or older versions, you may have reason to remove IE7 and restore IE6 at this time. Read more.

Only One Version of Internet Explorer. It is not possible to run both IE7 and IE6 on your system and allow each version of QuickBooks to invoke the right version of IE. You can only have one version of Internet Explorer installed at a time.

We recommend that you take the following steps, depending on the oldest version of QuickBooks that you use:

My oldest version of QuickBooks is

  • QuickBooks 2007 or (QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 7.0) – good to go (R4 recommended)
  • QuickBooks 2006 (or QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 6.0) – good to go with R9
  • QuickBooks 2005 (or QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 5.0) – good to go with R9
  • QuickBooks 2004 or earlier – decline or remove IE7 and restore IE6. R11 recommended

Restoring IE6. See the links following.

Client Help on IE7 and QuickBooks 2004

Internet Explorer 7.0 Resource Center. Intuit created this resource at

www.QuickBooks.com/support/IE7

The site answers general questions on IE7 with special resources aimed at users of QuickBooks 2004:

  • Background. To date our tests show IE7 affects these aspects of QuickBooks 2004:

    • Accessing help
    • Setting up a new payroll service
    • Using any of the navigators: Company, Customers, Vendors, Employees, Banking, Business Services, and Reports

The only way to avoid the effects of IE7 on QuickBooks 2004 will be to remove IE7 and restore IE6. The last link above provides clear instructions on how to do this.

Removing Recurring Error Message in QuickBooks 2004. Prior to R11, QuickBooks 2004 would show the same error message relating to IE7 every time the QuickBooks software was accessed. In R11, the user can now decline future viewings of the error message.

  • Once upon a time there was Lotus 123 that gave us folks that do a lot of spreadsheets... seemingly unlimited number of colors to choose to do background highlighting.  Life was good.

And then came Excel, XP, 2000, 2003 even...that limited our selections of colors so we had to chose the basic ones.  We were not happy in spreadsheet land.  We went from unlimited to limits.

Until 2007.  When tonight I realized that no longer were we limited in our color palette... on no.. but with a magical button labelled "more colors"......

Suddenly an entire array of colors popped up

The folks at the office will love that... that's been a major annoyance from the migration from Lotus 123 eons ago... to Excel... the loss of Colors....in fact this has been a question with each upgrade of Excel "Are there more colors?"  I can now say "Yes, we have more colors!"

    Life is good...

    http://www.threatcode.com/group_policy.htm

... of course I still think the easier solution is to buy Quickbooks 2007 as it was built to run without admin rights (after the R4 version in particular) and will run on Vista.... but that's just after doing screen shots for a few hours so that might have a bearing on that attitude....

(and word is tech support is still saying that you need to give it admin rights, which is totally incorrect as this is a supported method to do this  - admin rights are not manditory at all and all you need to do is fire up that Group Policy Management console and start making your users happy non-administrators)

So tonight I was teaching a class on Quickbooks to farming clients at the local University of California extension office and the lab computers had been preloaded with Quickbooks and data files.  And so we go to launch the software and Quickbooks lovely "You must be an administrator or power user to run this program" popped up.

    ...and I smiled...

Because even though we had to then scramble to call the lab administrator, tell her that the desktops needed local admin access and she had to remotely change the settings and reboot the box it meant... yes... you guessed it... I had a captive audience for the next 15 to 20 minutes to talk about why the fact that Quickbooks 2006 (not 7) didn't load, why this showcased that UC Merced cared even about how their labs were set up...that their administrator was running the lab in a more restricted setting that  limited what could be downloaded to the desktop.  And this action meant that they were more secure from bad things getting on the systems.  And while we were still waiting, I showed on the Vista laptop that I brought along that this new operating system needed a new version of Quickbooks to run properly on it.  And when the administrator had made the changes, that the systems were less secure than they could be and now bad things could happen on the system.

The question came up in regards to the security of Vista and I truthfully said that while Vista was better, that it still depended on "us" to be hardened.  I said that there was talk on a security listserve that it was harder to break into a fully patched system these days so the bad guys were using tricks to get us to download things.  I said to the class that in Vista, while there were lots more good security in it (Roger talks about some of them here) if you got tricked into installing something, that the security issues were still there as long as bad guys could trick you into installing something you shouldn't..and I said that we had to "harden" us to ensure we weren't as susceptible to this kind of stuff.  I said that my Mom always warned about things that sounded too good to be true and then I gave samples of some of the "Phishing emails" that I personally had received. I told them that we need to listen to "Mom" a lot more in the future.

So that 15 minutes of blank time I had to fill because the Quickbooks couldn't handle running without administrative rights......yeah.... priceless  :-)

WSUS Product Team Blog : New Product Category for ISA Firewall client:

How to obtain the version of Firewall Client for ISA Server (December
2006) that includes Windows Vista support:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929556

Finally the ISA firewall client that will support Vista is out today and there's a new WSUS category to boot!

This is a tad confusing because the page on the download site says "Public beta" but the KB article doesn't say beta, nor does SeanDaniel.com....in the public ISA newsgroup it was posted that these are indeed final parts.

    Vlad says this:

    http://www.vladville.com/2006/12/no-outlook-for-you-exchange-2007-licensing-change.html

I say that it's funny because many SBS var/vaps have said that their client always felt double charged as they bought Outlook on their Office suite and then got it again with Exchange.

    Can't please everyone can you?

And for those who say "yes but now my client won't buy Outlook 2007", the mismatch of Office to Outlook suites broke more than it was worth in my opinion... send to and mail to won't work if you have a mismatch going on.

Bottom line.... be careful what you ask for... you just might get it...

    From the mailbag...

Can I ask this question? Where in the SQL 2005 SBS 2003 Premium installation do we find the SQL
Management Studio that allows you to import and export databases
First off ... and I think this is a smidge weird.. but it's not default installed... I think the Premium
install steps document tell you to click and install more and ensure you get this but unless you
click on the Management tools and change that "X" to a "Will be installed on the local hard drive"
you won't get the management tool console that you are looking for.

I also clicked on the SQL reporting tools and installed that fully as well

In fact, while you are there you may want to click around and see what other things look
    interesting to install :-)

The Crabby Office Lady talks about passwords in this video and she says that if you've lost the password to a file, you've lost that file for good. And dear Crabby.... in the forensic world of computing the answer is actually.. "it depends"....there are ways to get into a password protected file if you've forgotten the password especially if the password is pretty lame in the first place.

You see there are vendors that do sell programs that ...uh..well.. sort of are able to break into things.  Now a few years back most things used crappy (not to be confused with crabby) encryption and algorithms to secure files... these days they are a little bit better but they really rely on YOU.  If you choose a crappy password.... something easy...short... no funky characters... it's pretty trival for Elcomsoft.com to brute force a password for a file that you've forgotten if the password is say.... password.

P.S. you might want to subscribe to her web site and RSS feed as you get more into Office 2007.....

    I call the "sales" department.
I ask "can I run two copies of the Timekeeping software?
    "Yes" they say.
"You just install it with the new license disk and point it to the new folder location.

So I go to install it and realize that I can't get it do what it should be doing... it's still pointing back to the master database.... so I call support this time (note to self, don't call sales, call support in the future) and they tell me that the database 'hard codes' in the registry pointer files so that to get two diff companies on the same desktop I have to run this vb script and mangle registry entries each time the icon is launched.

Okay....we're going to use that Terminal Server box and it's going to be the second company/second database..... having "merging registry" keys makes me a bit nervous....

...you'd think I'd learn to not listen to salespeople....

    Hi all,

We have a nicely running SBS 2003 domain using Trend's CSM Suite.

I have added a Vista client to the domain and now need to add anti virus to
the client.  I looked around the Trend site but can't seem to decide if the
client install packages on the SBS server will work with Vista.

Has anyone tried this?  Are there any gotchas?  Did I miss info on the Trend
    site?

    Thanks!

    Stu

Been there, done that, and it's not ready... There's a lot of little things I'm finding that just aren't in place for me to consider Vista "business ready" and this is one of them.  I don't see any sign of a Vista ready version for Officescan either.  So for now, Vista is on my laptop and a few other "bleeding edge" machines, but not rolling out to the fleet.  Remember that while Vista has Defender, it does not have antivirus built in and thus will still warn you about not having full malware protection.

Trend does have a beta program though - http://endpointsecurity.trendmicro.com/pr/tm/en-us/enterprise/eps/vista.aspx?alsck=35

P.S.  some other interesting info on antivirus...
