When betas shouldn't go on SBS - FCS is a BETA

I yell at folks that talk about betas outside of beta venues but this post in the newsgroup copied below made me post this:

For all those SBSers that are chomping on the bit to take a look at Forefront Client Security you need to make me a promise..that if you've never set up a Virtual pc/Virtual Server image of SBS you will do it now and use THAT for your FCS public beta testing.  You WILL get a "blue check of death" on WSUS and will mess up your WSUS. And you might mess up more than that if you aren't careful.  You need to play with this on an install that you won't think twice about rolling back and starting over.

FCS's beta at this time is made for bigger firms... and all of you MUST promise me that you will not install this on a near real, real, marginally real, home server, etc etc.  If you want to take a look at this you need to install this on a totally pretend box.

To be fair to the beta, the supported install story is not tweaked or adjusted AT ALL for SBS.  Therefore to even get it installed on a SBS server you have to manually install SQL reporting services in the SQL 2005, you have to disable SSL, and there's an expected final config error that is just because the public beta at this time is built for SQL Enteprise (or is it standard.. I forget).  Bottom line if you want to play, ping me and I'll gather the notes I took to install it.

But bottom line.. if you want to try this out ... and you put this on a real SBS server.... I will take my 2x4 and hit you upside the head. (1)  It's a beta.  And while it's a public beta... the translation of "public beta" does not mean "oh yeah sure, put this on your real live SBS box".

It's a B-E-T-A.... and betas don't go on P-R-O-D-U-C-T-I-O-N SBS boxes.  Got it?

P.S.  One Care can't go on a Server, so you can save that testing.  :-)

(1) and if you think I'm joking about the 2x4.. take a look here http://www.sbslinks.com/susandevice.htm :-)

I have just installed Forefront Client Security (FCS) on my SBSR2 WSUS server.

YIKES.... What a mess

1. Blew up the WSUS for SBSR2 because any changes made to WSUS disables the
WSUS reporting as installed by default in SBS. I was hoping that FCS would
recognize the existance of WSUS and use it without changing any settings. Fat
chance.
2. Went ahead anyways and tried to get FCS to work by deploying a policy. Nada

I do qualify that I was challenged to understand the deployment guide which
is sketchy at best.

I recommend staying away from FCS with SBSR2 unless you are ready to engage
the biggies at MS. The only way Im going back to FCS, is if MS provides the
integration into SBS the way they did nicely with WSUS. Too bad, I guess its
back to
F@%#$& TrendMicro.

Folks, what part of BETA don't you understand? You have NO BUSINESS installing a beta product on your production SBS server. Period.

Running a beta should never be done on any system you care about or aren't willing to simply wipe and start over with. And that's never our SBS box.

In fairness the newsgrouper did say it was a test...so even he knew better than to try this on a real server.
