Google is turning into the evil empire

Okay so I was googling to find the citation for the famous Linda Evangelista quote "I don't get out of bed for less than $10,000" when my OEM installed XP MCE computer got an update from it's OEM installation of the Google toolbar...notice please how if I just blindly click "Ok" Google can and will easily change my default search engine to it?

Excuse me?  Where in the EULA does it say that vendors can make it slightly so slimy that I end up blindly clicking OK and having to ensure I read the detailed fine print to ensure I don't get this kind of stuff done to my computer?

So when does Google toolbar cross over the line of spyware?

(for the record, the "I don't get out of bed  ... " quote by Linda is the second famous quote on this page.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linda_Evangelista)

Yeah, they're pretty arrogant. They haven't even returned my calls most of the time that I ask questions for a story I'm writing.

Why not install Windows Live! toolbar and set the default search engine as google? I have been thinking of doing that so I only have one toolbar installed.

Do you have Google Desktop installed? Every time you shut it down manually, you get nagged with an 'are you sure' screen which includes an option to run Google Desktop on startup that is enabled by default.

You can't get rid of the dialogue.  It will appear every single time you shut down the Google software.  If you turn off the tick, it will be re-enabled the next time you shut down Google Desktop:

sandi I cannot repeat this behavior on my own system. Are you sure you are running the latest Google Desktop? There was an update about 3 weeks ago. As for the toolbar, All the major toolbar providers have similar tactics. My favorite is Adobe shockwave wants to install google toolbar, and Adobe flash wants to install yahoo. Both are selected by defaults. How many machines that have 1/3 of their browser's screen taken up by toolbars that fight to block pop-ups? Well, at least with that crap browser IE they are.

Hm, I *may* try the latest version some day soon but, frankly, the less Google I have on my machine, the better.  The more I try to stay away from them, the more determined they seem to be to find a way on to my system.

We recently purchased 6 Dell PC's for our office, all pre-installed full of miscellaneous junk including.... you guessed it... Google Toolbar & Desktop Search. I won't even mention the other stuff. The uninstall process took 6 times ages = too long. I know that's how Dell's kit is so inexpensive, but I'm now thinking it's probably false economy.
