When you bought a whole bunch of harddrives around the same time... don't be surprised if suddenly two of them start acting flaky within a few months of each other. Thus date those drives just like you would have with tapes and expect a life span accordingly. I'm retiring my second LACIE and will do a Department of Defense style wipe before bringing it home and making it a part of my home network's rotation.
How do you wipe the drives?
Very carefully to ensure that nothing can be retrived back. Read this for more on disk sanitation standards.
