So what do you think?

Okay so we're taking a poll..... read this article.... a couple of folks have pinged and says the author sure sounds like he used the www.sbsmigration.com method to move his problem server... the use of "TempDC" ...and the word "SwingMigration" made a couple of people go..hmmmm that sounds an awful lot like the guy used Jeff Middleton's method and didn't give him credit where credit is due of bailing him out of a situation....

...so what do you think?

Well he does mention that he came across a process call swing migration:

"one of my guys came across a technique for installing a new SBS into an existing domain called a “swing migration.” "

He just does not cite the reference.

Get Jeff to check his client records.  (Note I have seen the swing migration toolkit posted to the newsgroups)  Don't shoot the messenger I am a happy swinger who has paid for it ;)

# Using virtualization to help swing an Exchange upgrade

Over at InfoWorld, Keith Schultz points out a good method in doing an Exchange (or SBS for that matter) upgrade from one machine to another. It's called "Swing Migration", and its a method developed by my friend and fellow MVP, Jeff Middleton.

i was expecting to see this dude claiming the swing method as his own. i don't see that in play here.

however, it would have been a trivial thing to link the words "swing migration" to sbsmigration.com, and then there's no question whatsoever.

but that might also come across as a free ad, which infoworld prolly isn't big on.

at the least...

the fact those words were used in that distinctive way will in all likellihood make more folks curious to find out what it means.

put swing migration in google, and the results are nearly all pointing to jeff, or a community site that does cite him.

so...in a certain sense it might be a bit of free advertisment that jeff wouldn't normally get at all.

So how about a "summary" of this informal comment poll pulled into a letter to the editor!!

I would have just googled "swing migration" and found what I wanted, but I already have the kit so I knew what he was talking about.

I don't see what the big deal is (*duck* as the big SBS community players throw tomatoes at me :-p)

When I read this article in print form I knew immediately that it had roots in Jeff's swing migration methodolgy.  It seems a shame that the author, presumably one of "us" consultants, didn't see fit to share that information with his audience.  Information is only useful when it is complete and when it is communicated to those who can benefit from it.

I would like to think that InfoWorld doesn't withhold a product's name just to prevent someone from getting a bit of publicity.  How can they review Windows Vista without mentioning the product name and that of Microsoft?  In this case I think that the author could have and should have been more thorough in noting what the swing migration process involves and how interested parties could get more information about the process and Jeff's product.  It's as if someone mentions a great piece of software that can radically improve a PowerPoint presentation and fails to mention that product is called Ovation.

The bottom line is that the article really lacked depth.  It just touched the surface of many importnat points and left the reader with nowhere to go for more information.  I will credit the author with the foresight to use Virtual PC, which is a different slant on the process.  However, don't just tell me what you did over the weekend, tell me how you did it.

To really get a sense of the story, it helps to see the May 29 InfoWorld cover.  In big letters, it proclaims, “Hacks, Fixes, & Work-Arounds. . . You won’t find them in the manual, but when all else fails, these seat-of-the-pants solutions can keep the enterprise up and running.”  The article is actually a collection of six hacks; the swing migration story is one of the six.

When I read the story I first thought “Great!  A story on SBS in an enterprise mag!”  But then when Jeff – the *developer* of this ultimate SBS hack – wasn’t even mentioned, it felt like yet another slap in the face of the entire community.

Yeah, I probably am overreacting, and anyone that googles “swing migration” will find Jeff, but still. . . Can’t we (and Jeff!) get a little more respect?

Guys - Jeff may have published the "Swing" method and perfected it but we had been doing a similar migration method before Jeff even talked about it a SMB Nation.  Give others out there their due.

(Hey, I paid for Jeff's documents to compare what he did to what we were doing and no doubt his published methods are superior to ours.  Just don't think he "invented" it.)

Yah, MS even touches on this here so who knows where the author got the info

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821896/en-us

Looking back I'm wondering if the focus and main point was on Virtualization and how that helped the writer with the tasks.

But I do have to say Jeff did a great job at putting everything together and he gets back to us right away if we have issues which is tough to find nowadays given the complexity of this type of upgrade.

If anyone wants to know the inner workings of AD, get the kit, I've learned a ton.

I think it would have been best to just contact the guy and let him know where it came from, he may have been given a stripped/unbadged version by one of his techs. First thing I would have done is type "Swing Migration" in google so would have found the source anyway, and if youve done a swing or 8 you will see Jeff has shown all his microsoft references so he really worked at providing the glue that put it together, where it came from I dont care, that it works and is being further developed I do. I paid for mine and will again in the future for updates. Using Virtual PC is a no brainer for the task of a swing migration it was the first thing I though of when I did my first one.
