The Exchange patch needed for our boxes needs a reboot

When going to apply this months patches.. and if you are doing your due diligence and reading the bulletins... there's a bit of SBSism that is missing from the KB this month:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-019.mspx

Restart Requirement

Microsoft original version

SBSized version

This update does not DOES require a restart. The installer stops the required services, applies the update, and then restarts the services. However, if the required services cannot be stopped for any reason, or if required files are being used, this update will require a restart. If this behavior occurs, a message appears that advises you to restart. To help reduce the chance that a reboot will be required, stop all affected services and close all applications that may use the affected files prior to installing the security update. For more information about the reasons why you may be prompted to restart your computer, see Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 887012.

So just be aware... and don't go approving that patch during the middle of the day...also if you are looking for updates while on the server and you don't see this one being offered up to you, but you do see MS06-018 the MSDTC patch being offered on your box that means two things...

1.  You don't have Windows 2003 sp1/SBS 2003 sp1 on that box...and come on guys.. it's now a YEAR since SP1 shipped ... come on gang.. let's get patching

2.  You may not have flipped that box to Microsoft update from Windows Update. It's very obvious these days if you are still on the windows update.. so click through that start here button and flip yourself over to Microsoft update.  Remember that Exchange patches ONLY come down if you have Microsoft Update on that server or you are WSUSing... or obviously... running SBS 2003 R2 beta... those patches will show up at tonight's sync as needing approval... I can hardly wait for the excitement of clicking approve!

.... okay.. so I reallllyyyy need a life...

Susan,

I have found the same issue but I found that if I started the services manually then I could use Exchange, without a reboot. My question to you is, if you can't do an immediate reboot because its a customers box should you :

a) Apply the exchange patch and restart the services ? or
b) Apply the patch and make the client reboot then and there ?

If you apply the patch and restart the Exchange services are those services running with the patches applied or these only happen after a reboot ?

Thanks
Robert

Well, for those of us who just aren't with the program - or for customer's who will never be with the problem... and they're running SBS2003 no SP, Exchange no SP - but fully patched otherwise, how do we tell if we're at risk? According to MS06-019 the update only applies to Ex2000-postSP3rollup, Ex2003Sp1, and Ex2003SP2. What if you're at Ex2003-noSP on a SBS2003-NoSP box? What to do then?

I don't buy the whole "get with the program, that was a year ago" argument. Because no matter what I do, I'm going to have a subset of customers who will never "get with the program".
