A little community... a little bit of migration... oh and oops did I happen to mention he was on Vlad's SBS show?
"I have this server built ...how do I move everything to a new box?"
"I have a SBS 2000 domain... how can I move everything without adjusting the domain name or anything?"
"How can I not disrupt the move of a network to new hardware"
I've said this before, I'll say it again. Migrations sucks.
From Sean to Peter there's just no other way to explain it. No matter what migation method you use, it's just icky.
Our migration guru, Jeff Middleton has at least made it easier so you are not alone going through migration any more.... first off he's opened up his new web site that includes, not only forums for technical support, but also special discounts for members that are part of SBS Partner groups.
The gist of SBSmigration method is that in SBSland we are no different than our big brothers.. we have the same AD glue. So to get the glue from that machine over there...to the new machine over here you set up a replication of that AD glue between the old server and a temporary server (it can even be vpc or vmware). Once the replication is done, you cut the cord between the two boxes and on the temporary box "seize" the roles and suck over the five FSMO roles to be on that system. Then you build a new server with exactly the same name and domain name as the original box and do one more replication. You ensure that the AD glue is on the new hardware, cut the cord between the temporary box and the new server and once again, suck over those roles to the final server. You are now ready to slide in the new server in exactly the same spot as the old server.
The key element is that there's only a short window of real downtime and during all this process the original box is intact and still chugging along. Obviously there's a lot more steps involved but that's the basic foundation of it.
So check out the new site, the new subscription offering, the new forums.
P.S. Boy was I blonde and forgot to mention that Jeff was on The SBSShow so go check that out!!!!
