What's new in WSUS 3.0?

Continuing from my previous posts What can you expect in WSUS 3.0?, Fabrice Meillon posted more information on WSUS 3.0. I am excited to see all those new features and improvements.

In short;

  • SQL 2005 will be supported on WSUS 3.0 and infact SQL Server 2005, SQL Express is required as a prerequisite for installing WSUS 3.0
  • WSUS 3.0 can be installed on Windows Server 2003 (I am not sure if Windows 2000 is a supported platform).
  • The Client requirements are same as WSUS 2.0 (Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP1, Windows Server 2003).
  • In-place upgrade from WSUS 2.0 is supported. This was badly missing (sus-wus-wsus).
  • Most of us wanted to sync SUS with WSUS 2.0 - and this functionality is now added in WSUS 3.0. You can now sync WSUS 2.0 with WSUS 3.0
  • Previously, it was impossible to switch from Replica mode without a reinstall and now with WSUS 3.0, you can easily move between Replica and Autonomous modes without a reinstall. Oh yes, Replica DSS can now synch with USS or MU directly - that's cool:-).
  • We have discussed a lot in microsoft.public.windows.server.update_services on support for x64 for WSUS 2.0 and the good news is WSUS 3.0 has native support for x64.
  • WOW! Access to drivers and hotfixes via the Microsoft Update (MU) Catalog site is tightly integrated with WSUS 3.0 to enable easy drivers and hotfix access.

I think it will be almost criminal for MS to leave out the Win2K Server users. Many are, like me, in the position of supporting a non-profit that cannot afford to go to W2K03. In effect, they will be ending WSUS as  a free product for many of us....

Unfortunately there is still no feature to download, search or interface with the local 40 digit file on your local server.

Windows 2000 is suported within the WSUS 3.o beta 2 version
