I know PDC was a week ago but I just managed to get my hands on the pictures.

I got to hang out with the guys from Telerik during PDC on their booth and then Spence and i went out with them for dinner/drinks etc.

Microsoft recently announced that the next generation of its Web content management technology will be released as part of Microsoft Office "12", the code name for the next version of the Microsoft Office System. The new offering will succeed Microsoft Content Management Server (MCMS) 2002. Office "12" will provide seamless integrated Web content management and portal capabilities that will share a common, scalable architecture built on the next-generation Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services foundation. The new release will provide significant enhancements and new capabilities for page authoring, workflow and approval, content deployment and overall site administration and management. Office "12" is expected to be available in the second half of calendar year 2006.

MCMS sorting PostingCollection workaround

I've been working on a fairly major MCMS2002 project and one of the things I've come up against is creating a PostingCollection. Now MCMS doesn't allow you to create a PostingCollection type so the only way around this is to store your collection of posts in an ArrayList. This is a shame as you loose the sorting functionality that is baked into the PostingCollection.

Having looked into this issue I've found a nice way to get sorting on the ArrayList that contains your posts. I actually used the CollectionView class which I mentioned previously in my blog. Using this I can pass in my ArrayList that has my posts in it and I can sort on any of the properties of the MCMS Posting type. I think this technique is extremely powerful when you are building up a custom collections of posts to give you powerful sorting and filtering options.

MCMS 2002 Online Help hidden goodness

I was reading Andrew Connell's Link Blog and I saw he linked to the Microsoft Content Management Server 2002 Online Help.

So I went and pulled it down but to my supprise there is lots of hidden goodness in it (check the file sizes).

What could be in there?

Maybe documentation on the missing PAPI calls like maintaining rights groups or creating channel custom properties?
Hidden Code Samples?
a hidden Karoke track by Stefan and Arpan?

Or it could just be quality documentation :)

I had a big chat with Nick today. He showed me some really really cool new stuff.

In preparation for the CMS Rapid webcast I am doing (in the Asia-Pacific timezone GMT+10) I also had a big play with LiveMeeting (www.microsoft.com/livemeeting) they are giving out 15 days of free subscriptions. – very cool –

you sign up;
start a livemeeting;
tell it to broadcast audio over the internet - you think it is going to come from your mic but what you actually do is enter your phone number (any country code) and it then calls you; and broadcasts your phonecall out to the web.
coolest thing i've seen for a while - all for free!!!

Yesterday we had the 500th unique person download RAPID which is a milestone we had our eye on, and is simply superb news !

We have downloads from more than 60 different countries with the top 5 looking like this: US, UK, Canada, Netherlands, Australia and Denmark (last two are joint 5th !)

We also have 162 and 141 different partner and customer organisations respectively. For a specialist solution these are truly impressive statistics and demonstrate the significant uptake of RAPID across the world.

We are also seeing no plateauing of the rate of download - the number of people on average per day is as high as it was at pretty much any stage other than the very first 2 days of the beta stage when the download was first made available.

Getting around the lack of 'map channel'

I encountered the nasty shortcoming of there being no "Map Channel Names to
Host Headers" option in the Standard Edition of CMS. To work around this, I
found ISAPI_REWRITE to be a very handy tool.

Just thought I'd mention too the other main reasons to use MCMS 2002 Enterprise Edition are:-

- Clusterable (multiple MCMS front end servers backing onto 1 database)

It was at the QMSDNUG at Microsoft's offices tonight.

This MCMS implementation is HUGE!

- no authoring via MCMS

- all authoring done via InfoPath

- MCMS is only an API & Engine (but strangely they only used the out-of-the-box MCMS workflow)

- Huge meta data system that overlays every element in the system so content can easily be searched, aggregated & displayed.

- Small 'webparts' that are actually user controls sucked up into pages definable by the users

- Entire system is exported as Xml, then transformed (via XSLTs) into ASPX pages.

Really cool stuff!

For the main part of the meeting, we're pleased to be joined by David Connors. David is a software engineer (and managing director) with Codify Pty Ltd. Codify is a software engineering consultancy that has been around since 1996. Codify works on a variety of project sizes; however our main specialisation is building complex bespoke software systems for large numbers or users and/or high transaction volumes. They run pretty much all of their projects on a traditional waterfall SDLC and this enables them to deliver mid sized systems (500-1000 engineering hours) on a fixed price basis and generally with a week or two of the original baseline. Codify has been engaged on an ongoing basis with Microsoft Australia since 1999 and has also undertaken work for Microsoft Corp and other Microsoft subsidiaries worldwide.

Background on PTYCMS 2.2
PTYCMS 2.2 is Microsoft Australia's second generation content management system built on MSCMS 2002, SQLServer and Infopath. PTYCMS 2.x is an entirely new code base that replaces the classic-ASP PTYCMS 1.x application. The goals for PTYCMS 1.x were as follows:
1. Substantially reduce costs associated with the production of content.
2. Provide consistent UI treatment.
3. Improve content creation turn around times.

The PTYCMS 2.0 and 2.2 projects were initiated with the following goals:
1. Extremely good usability for all aspects of the content publications process.

The presentation will focus on the architecture of PTYCMS 2.2 and its associated content personalisation engine. We will also discuss how the application is used in Australia, The United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and New Zealand.

Interesting Post on using a Mac for authoring MCMS content

We (Fluent Consulting) have developed 2 sites now that must support
Macs. Our conditions were even a little worse than yours. We also had
to support Mac OS 9.

You CANNOT use IE 5.2 to edit pages on CMS. IE 5.2 has a very buggy
JavaScript implementation and prevents the editor from working even in
the most basic of modes. This coupled with the fact that you cannot use
the built-in Microsoft editor because it uses VB Script and an ActiveX
control and thus will not work on a Mac.

The good news is you can support a Mac on CMS 2002. To do so, you have
to use FireFox 1.0 or Mozilla as the Mac editing browser and you have
to use the Telerik editor. To do this, download the Telerik CMS
PlaceHolder controls (http://www.telerik.com) and use it on all pages
that a Mac has to edit.

Most if not all of the Telerik WYSIWYG controls work (i.e. Spellcheck,
image placement, table builder, etc.). You will really like the
Telerik control once you use it. It is much better than the Microsoft
tool and (I believe) is officially sanctioned by Microsoft (I heard a
rumor that it will be the default editor in the next version of CMS).

All of the above works for Mac OS X 1.2 or higher (not lower versions
though). You can also support Mac OS 9 by downloading an unofficial
version of Mozilla. The version you need is 1.3.1 and you can find it
here: http://www.t3.rim.or.jp/~harunaga/mozilla-macos9/ This version
is not supported by Mozilla.org, so caveat emptor.

We are using the Telerik control and Mac OS 9 with the unofficial
version of Mozilla for a large school district and it currently works
on 50+ Macs running OS 9. The problem with this version of Mozilla is
that not quite all of the Telerik features work on Mac OS 9 (we had
trouble with spell check and some minor problems with some of the
editing). However, enough of them work and it is suitable for most
situations.

On Mac OS X, everything works, so you should be okay.

This is the only solution I currently know of. There are other
possibilities. You could try to build your own custom PlaceHolder using
another WYSIWYG editor (i.e. FreeBox, Rich Editor, etc.), but that will
take some time and work. The solution outlined above is probably your
best bet.

What is MCMS.RAPID ?

A brand new solution site for Microsoft Content Management Server (MCMS) written by Artemis Corporation providing a compelling starting point to almost all MCMS developments. Full details are here but basically you get a programming framework that sits on top of MCMS and a fully featured solution site, that provides numerous features to speed up and de-risk developments such as fully accessible site html, size a-z, a new power-user tool called Site Definer, enhanced metadata and an improved content editor interface.
