r.a.d.controls MCMS Edition

If these controls are as good as the radEditor for MCMS they will be a huge success!

Via  Mark Harrison

Back in October I mentioned that Telerik would eventually be creating the 'r.a.d.controls MCMS Edition' - this will be a package of their components that have been extended to be driven by MCMS configuration and content.

Telerik will shortly be announcing the release of 'Beta 1 of r.a.d.controls suite MCMS Edition' that will include:

  • r.a.d.editor : premium version
  • r.a.d.treeview
  • r.a.d.menu
  • r.a.d.panelbar
  • r.a.d.tabstrip
  • r.a.d.chart

The Premium version of the Editor that is shipped with the suite has the following differences from the free Standard version:

  • r.a.d.treeview and LoadOnDemand in the File Browser dialogs (Image, Media, etc)
  • Improved Undo/Redo mechanism
  • Improved dialog controls - r.a.d.editor 4 user controls - AlignmentSelector, ColorPicker, CssClassSelector, TableBorderControl
  • Paste from Word /paste plain text buttons
  • "Loading...." message during dialog load
  • Dashed borders in edit mode
  • Skinning support
  • List View and Tree View of the resources in the resource galleries
  • Local Attachment tab in the Document Manager

(the last two features will work their way into the free version)

The beta can be downloaded at www.mcmscontrols.com. You can log in with your User Name and Password obtained from here . You can also generate trial keys if you wish to test the controls on a URL other than http://localhost

Comments should be submitted to betasupport@telerik.com.

Microsoft Applications SIG (March) - Advanced Creation of Webparts for Sharepoint Portal Server

Matthew Cosier is doing a SPS presentation around Australia – I’ve registered.

I will be touring Australia in March, presenting the Advanced Creation of Webparts for Sharepoint Portal Server Application SIG!!

Register for the event here:
https://www.local.microsoft.com.au/australia/events/register/home.aspx?levent=525095&linvitation

The official agenda for the session is as follows:

  • Creating Web Parts using Microsoft Visual Studio .NET
  • Accessing standard services from SharePoint Portal Server
  • Extending your Web Part to be fully integrated with SharePoint Portal Server
  • Taking advantage of the Single Sign On Service in Web Parts

I will be swapping and changing into that a little bit, and hope to make the session a little more dynamic and informative!
One of the biggest, most interesting topics I will cover is the extension of the OTB Sharepoint Portal Search capabilities, outlining the pros/cons in developing a custom advanced search webpart.  I may also introduce some new funky things which are coming in later releases!

Stay tuned and make sure you register today!

I look forward to seeing you all there!  Make sure you all come and say G'day and introduce yourselfs, I am really looking forward to meeting more of the community!

(Special thanks to Kleefy for this post, and to the TS community & Pen Lewin for making this happen!)

SharePoint web part development: resources you should read

Via Serge van den Oever [Macaw]

When you dive into web part development for SharePoint 2003 and need some reading on the topic, have at least a look at the following articles:

And if you don’t wan’t to go the hard way… have a look at Smart Part, a generic web part that allows hosting of user controls. Have a look at Jan’s blog for more info: http://weblogs.asp.net/jan/

Skelta Workflow Lite for CMS

This is SO COOL! – Considering products like TeamPlate usually cost more than the MCMS license :)

Via  Mark Harrison

Skelta Workflow.NET - the embeddable .NET workflow engine based on the Microsoft .NET framework - is to be made available as a Lite version free of charge for CMS users.

We are looking for a CMS expert(s) that would like to volunteer to create the guidance and samples of integrating CMS and Skelta. Envision - CMS vNext and SPS vNext

Via Mark Harrison

Just back from Envision - an internal technical pre-sales conference in Redmond with two thousand attendees from all over the world. There was some general roadmap sessions but I was also privileged to attend an 'insider group' deep drill down of CMS vNext and SPS vNext. What the product team showed me was superb ... if they deliver then the next generation CMS/SharePoint will rock! Don't believe the FUD stories going around.

Rapid - Visual Demos Live

The demos look great!

Via MCMS.RAPID Launch

I put the first of my proposed visual tours live today on the MCMS.RAPID site. I hope they are useful - particularly aimed at people who perhaps haven't had the skills nor time to install the beta but want to get some guide as to what this is all about. Note that this first 'flypast' tour is focussing on the main solution site that we ship with RAPID, and is the one from the beta 2 release. We are working on a second solution site that will be released very soon.

There are 4 versions of the tour as described on the demos page on the site. Power viewers, middleweights and lite users, depending on your own technology, screen size etc. 2 of them are Windows Media format and 2 are Flash format. The highest quality came from the Flash version with maximised framerate etc but it is a fairly hefty demo - typically about 40 secs of downloading before the animation starts.

All feedback welcome as ever ! I will post further info in due course on some of my learnings and tips in doing these tours, as well of course as doing some more. Site Definer usage is top of the list

Sponsor the Special DEMO@15 Edition of G'Day World!

Wonder if it would be too much if I was their sponsor and every 5 minutes they had to say “Thanks Angus”  or “Sponsored by Angus Rocks!

Yeah Yeah, Jeremy auctioned off his blogging, but that was BLOGGING. This is PODCASTING. It's different and that's my position and I'm sticking with it. :-)

Upcoming SharePoint Webcasts

Via Eli Robillard's

Just in from Scott Howlett of iMason are two terrific WebCasts, one tomorrow (Tuesday, January 25) and one in February. Tomorrow's topic appears to cover accessing SharePoint as a service, and promises a healthy bit of usable code to download. February's session covers search and indexing, an important but oft-overlooking topic. In fact in any SharePoint deployment, planning the index should come soon after step one: cataloguing an organization's existing knowledge. And if you glossed over both of those, you should really pick up the Resource Kit between now and Scott's February WebCast.

. . .

I thought you might be interested in two upcoming MSDN Webcasts that imason is delivering.  These follow on from earlier Sharepoint Webcasts that were presented in 2004.  You can view the previous webcast by clicking on these links:  SPS 2.0: Developer Considerationsand SPS 2.0: Architecture and Best Practices for SPS Development.   I think you’ll find these upcoming Webcasts compelling, and the January 25th webcast might include Visual Studio Tools for Office 2005 and some bits from Whidbey!  The events are about 45 minutes, are delivered online and are free so feel free to forward these to anyone you think might be interested.

January 25, 2005 - SPS 2.0: Developing Sharepoint Solutions Without WebParts
Register Now Add to Calendar

Description:
Many people are actively developing Sharepoint solutions using the expected WebPartPage/WebPart paradigm. This is indeed a powerful model to be working with. However, it is not the only one that you can use. In fact, the Sharepoint technologies are split between back-end technologies (security, storage, searching...) and front-end technologies (templates, webparts...). As such, it is very possible to leverage the back-end technologies using other front-end technologies such as WinForms, Console Applications and WebForms. In this session, we’ll outline why you might want to do this and we’ll provide a truckload of code samples and demos.

February 24, 2005 - Leveraging the Power of Custom Search and Ranking

Description:
In this level 400 presentation, we’ll go extremely “deep” on authoring applications that utilize Sharepoint’s powerful search capabilities. We’ll provide lots of information about how to author search queries, how to execute search queries and how to leverage the “ranking” capability of the search index. We’ll also include a bunch of demos and some sample code.

Business Intelligence Portal (Displaying OLAP data) via SPS or WSS

Its pretty cool – we (Data#3 Microsoft Applications Solutions) wrote a heap of reports using SQL RS to display data from our MS CRM implementation in SharePoint/WSS – may look at taking it one further using this…

Via  Patrick Tisseghem's Blog

BIP? BIP stands for Business Intelligence Portal and it is really a very useful set of web parts allowing SharePoint users to view their OLAP or relational data in various ways. You do not have to have a SharePoint Portal Server installed, it works very nicely also on Windows SharePoint Services. Easy to install, easy to configure. It is provided by Microsoft as a sample application but for me it is much more than simply a sample application. There is for example the 'BIP Viewer', a very smart web part.

Useful is also the possibility to define and configure charts, spreadsheets, gauges, data analyzers and more centrally and then simply have the users connect to the configuration they need at that moment. BIP comes with a site definition. A new SharePoint team site can be created using the definition and in it you can manage the BIP tree.

The BIP viewer has 4 panels you can activate. In each of the panels, you can visualize one of the possible GUI components. Web dialogs allow users to define the configuration (eg. toolbar yes or no, ...) and the data source that will be used for the data (OLAP, relational, XML,...).

So, if you are in need to display BI-data, certainly have a look at these web parts and the BIP site definition. I see great possibilities for it in some of our projects.

See you there too!

Interesting Post on using a Mac for authoring MCMS content
See it on Google Groups as well - also check out the Fluent Consulting blog.
We (Fluent Consulting) have developed 2 sites now that must support
Macs. Our conditions were even a little worse than yours. We also had
    to support Mac OS 9.

You CANNOT use IE 5.2 to edit pages on CMS. IE 5.2 has a very buggy
JavaScript implementation and prevents the editor from working even in
the most basic of modes. This coupled with the fact that you cannot use
the built-in Microsoft editor because it uses VB Script and an ActiveX
control and thus will not work on a Mac.

The good news is you can support a Mac on CMS 2002. To do so, you have
to use FireFox 1.0 or Mozilla as the Mac editing browser and you have
to use the Telerik editor. To do this, download the Telerik CMS
PlaceHolder controls (http://www.telerik.com) and use it on all pages
that a Mac has to edit.

Most if not all of the Telerik WYSIWYG controls work (i.e. Spellcheck,
image placement, table builder, etc.).  You will really like the
Telerik control once you use it. It is much better than the Microsoft
tool and (I believe) is officially sanctioned by Microsoft (I heard a
rumor that it will be the default editor in the next version of CMS).

All of the above works for Mac OS X 1.2 or higher (not lower versions
though). You can  also support Mac OS 9 by downloading an unofficial
version of Mozilla. The version you need is 1.3.1 and you can find it
    here: http://www.t3.rim.or.jp/~harunaga/mozilla-macos9/  This version
is not supported by Mozilla.org, so caveat emptor.

We are using the Telerik control and Mac OS 9 with the unofficial
version of Mozilla for a large school district and it currently works
on 50+ Macs running OS 9. The problem with this version of Mozilla is
that not quite all of the Telerik features work on Mac OS 9 (we had
trouble with spell check and some minor problems with some of the
editing). However, enough of them work and it is suitable for most
    situations.

On Mac OS X, everything works, so you should be okay.

This is the only solution I currently know of. There are other
possibilities. You could try to build your own custom PlaceHolder using
another WYSIWYG editor (i.e. FreeBox, Rich Editor, etc.), but that will
take some time and work. The solution outlined above is probably your
    best bet.

    Hope this helps.
    Good Luck,
    Mark

a new sample was posted on gotdotnet.com --

A valuable tool for building and testing queries against Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003. This tool has a Windows interface that lets you connect to a portal and will gather all of a) the properties of crawled documents, b) content indexes and c) source groups. You can then simply point and click to select the items and criteria you want to use for your query, then execute. The search is sent to the SharePoint Query web service and the resultant XML is displayed in an easy to work with interface.
