Dunno what happened in the KB article title but this is a hotfix a lot of folks have been waiting for.

An older version of MSCOMM32.OCX has had the "kill bit" flag set.

The latest Windows Update has set the kill bit flag for an out of date but commonly used version of mscom32.ocx. Microsoft Security Advisory (969898)

Options

- roll back the update. Not recommended however instructions are in the above web page.

- locate the newest version of mscomm32.ocx and distribute to your users/customers. Not recommended as this will require the users to have admin privileges on their system to install the OCX or for the IT staff to do the update. In the meantime your app's serial port logic isn't working

- replace the mscomm32.ocx with API code. Perform Serial Port Communication - The sample code on this page consists of a VB module containing a collection of routines to perform serial port I/O without using the Microsoft Comm Control component. The module uses the Windows API to perform the overlapped I/O operations necessary for serial communications. Recommended

Symptoms

Errors such as

"<your application> doesn't support this ActiveX control".

"no inserted control" (or something like that)

"Object doesn't support this property or method"

When you open the form in design view you will get the following message "There is no Object in this control" and the control will no longer show the telephone icon.

Latest Access 2003 hotfix - 970623

Image control events on continuous form - Access 2007 SP2

"The main window of my app is a Continuous forms form where each row
has several small graphics (filepath bound image controls) and a few
text fields. When the user clicks on one of these, several events fire
based on which ROW the user clicked on. After installing the SP2, when
the user clicks on any of the image controls, the events fire as if
the user has clicked on the Top row, no matter what row he clicked on. "

This one has not yet been confirmed by others or Microsoft.

Navigation Pane Description missing - Access 2007 SP2

tables and queries. I enter a description in these tables and queries to

The 2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 2 (SP2) is available for download. (Yeah, that title doesn't make a lot of sense but hey what do I know.)

Description of 2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 2 (SP2) and of Microsoft Office Language Pack 2007 SP2 has a few big areas of improvement when it comes to Access 2007. You can download a detailed spreadsheet with all the fixes from the above page.

One interesting fix is "A user can only see the first 4,750 tables of an SQL database in the ODBC import dialog box. " Yowzer.

However the following I find particularly interesting: "Applying Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-028 may cause a benign corruption error in multi-user databases." What is a benign corruption issue? That one puzzles me.

Access 2007 and ACE 12 hotfix

Description of the Access 2007 hotfix package (Access.msp): October 28, 2008 mentions some performance problems when creating an RTF document and using some controls bound to linked tables. Given that 99% of Access form are using controls bound to a linked table this hotfix could be quite useful.

Also a somewhat obscure problem in ACE from my unilingual perspective however to our multilingual friends this could be important. Description of the Access 2007 hotfix package (Ace.msp): October 28, 2008

Note that if you don't need to use a hotfix then Microsoft suggests you don't install it.

(It would appear that unilingual isn't a word according to Windows Live Writer. Oh well. Not that Google is always correct but there are 96,000 hits for that word. And you don't want to know the second word which was suggested by Windows Live Writer in place of unilingual.)

"In Access 2007, you create a linked table to the Contacts folder in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007. Then, you add a contact in the linked table in Access 2007. When you double-click the contact in Outlook 2007, a new blank e-mail appears. However, you expect that a contact card that displays the contact information appears."

This hotfix actually updates ACE and not Access.

Only the first 12,000 tables appear in the Link Tables dialog box in Microsoft Access 2000, Microsoft Access 2002, or Microsoft Office Access 2003. Now who the heck would have an application that large? Clearly some organization with a lot of pull at Microsoft to get this problem fixed.

That KB article references an updated version of Jet 4.0 - 4.0.9514.0. Description of the Jet 4.0 Database Engine cumulative hotfix package for Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP1 and SP2, Windows Vista, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Server 2008: July 2, 2008. This KB article mentions Access 1.0 and 2.0 problems and ADO records from an Excel spreadsheet as well as the above mentioned problem.

In addition to the below there were some Office security patches this last patch Tuesday.

Description of the Office 2003 hotfix package: August 7, 2008.

When you try to insert an encapsulated PostScript (EPS) image into an Office 2003 document, an Office 2003 workbook, or an Office 2003 presentation, you may receive the following error message:

An error occurred while importing this file: File_Path\Image_Name.EPS

Additionally, you may not see a preview of the EPS image in the Insert Picture dialog box.

Description of the Access 2003 hotfix package: August 20, 2008

• Assume that in an Access 2003 project (.adp) table, you delete all child rows from a parent row. Then, you delete the parent row. In this scenario, Access 2003 stops responding.

Note This (the above) issue applies only to an Access 2003 project.
• Assume that you try to delete a parent record from a table in Datasheet view in an Access 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3) database (.mdb). Additionally, the Datasheet view uses a sub-datasheet that is expanded to show the related child records. In this scenario, Access 2003 SP3 stops responding.

SYMPTOMS

In Windows Vista, Microsoft Office Access may stop responding when you open a remote database that is already open on another Windows Vista-based computer.

Note This problem occurs on any flat file database. For example, this problem occurs on Foxpro database files.

Access 2003 post SP3 hotfix - combo box and list box controls

Jet 4.0 hotfix

Jet 4.0 Database Engine hotfix package - 943509 fixes a number of crashes in Microsoft Access 2002/XP and 2003 as well as other products that use Jet 4.0. (I assume it fixes problems in Access 2000 as well but that article doesn't specifically state that.)

Note though you should carefully examine the event logs of the system(s) which are experiencing problems to ensure this hotfix is applicable to your problem. A hotfix may introduce more problems that it will solve.
