I had the same problem - felt a bit dishearted when I saw there was no
response on your question.  But - I found the solution!

Van T. Dinh (MVP (Access) wrote in one of the other groups:
"If you use Norton AntiVirus, try disabling the Office Plug-in. You'll
find the Office Plug-in under 'Miscellaneous' in the Norton AntiVirus
options."

Update 2007-06-21.  Fellow MVP Jens Schilling mentioned this problem back in 2006-10-03 in this Google posting titled Connecting to data sources

# re: Norton Antivirus strikes again - ODBC to SQL Server 2005

In October of last year, I reported this behavior as a bug in beta testing Access 2007 with SQL Server 2000. When I learned that it was an issue with NAV, not Access, I decided to give up NAV, not  Access.

Just the ticket!  If you are using Norton Internet Security, disable the Office plug-in by unchecking the "Turn on scanning for Microsoft Office Documents" under Advanced Options => Miscellaneous. Close and re-open your database for the fix to take effect.
