Gutsy Blog Entries

By now, virtually every blog reader has heard about someone who's gotten fired for blogging.  Well, one of my Feedmap neighbors    just just posted this.   I don't think anyone will ever accuse him of not having b4lls ;-).

Anyway, I'm writing this from this new place called Lava Java which opened up across the street from my place.  The whole area is going through some pretty rapid development and until recently, the only place to hang out within walking distance was “The Clock” and Arbys.  “The Clock” closes on Sunday unfortunatley.  Lava Java is open from 6:30 to 10:00 EVERY NIGHT [lots of stuff doeesn't open on Sunday here, or at least opens late] which is pretty awesome, and they have wireless and darned comfortable furniture.  The only thing I don't dig is that they don't have fountain sode.  The whole notion of “taking it in the can” has a bad connotation and Diet coke in the bottle just doesn't cut it.  I've actually started drinking coffee again (espresso) and getting looped up off of chocolate covered espresso beans is pretty cool.  So you're probably thinking “Bill, please tell me that you aren't blogging about being able to hang out in a coffee shop and have free wi-fi”.  Well, I know, it's not exactly a new phenomenon, but Greenville is a weird place.  Dowtown there's free wireless but other than that, I've only come across one or two places that I can think of with it.  There's another coffee shop near my office that just got free wi-fi this week.  Which is why I think Greenville is so weird.  In some ways it's just like any other small big city.  In other ways though, it's definitely a bit behind the times ie, coffeeshops with free wi-fi

Anyway, so far I've gotten the first 32 pages of book #1 written, this seems like a pretty cool place to veg and write.  Got the newest VS.NET bits installed (and this time, I got everything installed on MY FIRST ATTEMPT!) and am the newest Longhorn is installing itself (hopefully it's done by now) right now.

Greenville always has had it's good points and bad. One point is that the type of companies around here don't exactly staff large amounts of IT staff. Because of that, the development community is relatively small, making demand for benefits like wi-fi an after-thought. This is also the case with technology. How many places do you know around here that are finally getting their feet wet in .NET 1.1? And this is just as they are getting ready to hang the wet-paint signs on .NET 2.0!

Wow, Lava Java? I've heard the name mentioned (we stole a friend's coupons at work one day last week), but I don't know where it is, nor have I been. How is it?

You're right about Greenville's backwards attitude towards technology. I posted another blog entry about something similar the other day (it focused on blog dinners and lunches being non-existant around here, but it's the same concept), pointing out that the entire South East seems to be lagging in the technology world.

So Mr. MVP, when you going to burn me a copy of all your MSDN stuff? Oh, and got any job openings for a slacker tech guy? :)
