DESCRIPTION
Error 0x80070643: Fatal error during installation. Microsoft Windows Server Update Services could not install Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine.
SYMPTOMS
Following Error is logged while installing Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and installation fails;

CAUSE
Error 0x80070643 translates to ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE. You see this error if you are installing WSUS from a Network Share, UNC or if due to insufficient rights on %systemdrive%.
RESOLUTION
Install WSUS locally and make sure System has full rights to the %systemdrive%.
