# re: How do I move the SUS content from one drive to other drive locally?

This is definitely not working. What I tried to make sure it's working, I renamed the old SUS content, but then I cannot even access the Susadmin site. When I restart IIS, I can access it, but then nothing is working. The error message Page cannot be displayed.
When I look into the register, I see a bunch of values pointing to d:\sus\content (old location), also under HKLM\System\Controlset002\Services\W3SVC\Parameters\Virtual Roots.
I've set everything back to its old location. If can you provide me a solution that's working, please email me to: hrsmal@yahoo.com.

Thanks,

Ron

# re: WSUS OEP News Groups

All of the computers in my organization have recently contacted the WSUS server.
All of them, however, have a last status report over 3 days. All of the reg
settings, GPOs, and WSUS files (installer 3.1, BITS 2.0, etc.) are current.
Since the computers have not reported their status to WSUS, WSUS cannot proceed with installing updates. The computer itself has progress with installing software, but it isn't reported on the WSUS server. How is it possible that the clients can contact the WSUS server hours ago, but cannot provide the WSUS server their last status report?

Just to let you know you do not need have a beta id to get subscribe. Using the information form Microsoft site
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/wus/newsgroup.mspx
and from this post, take off the betanews\ and just type in wusoepnews for the user name.
Use the same password on the website, Update.
Sorry if this what you meant by your post, Mohammed.

# re: How do I Install SUS on a Server that is also running other IIS Enabled Applications like SharePoint?

To do so, follow these steps:
a. On the server that is running SUS Server and Windows SharePoint Services, click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click SharePoint Central Administration.
b. In the Virtual Server Configuration area, click Configure virtual server settings.
c. On the Virtual Server List tab, click the virtual server that you have to add the excluded paths to.
d. Under Virtual Server Management, click Define Managed Paths.
e. In the Add a New Path section, type the path to exclude in the Path box.
f. Click Excluded Path, and then click OK.
g. Repeat steps 4 through 6 for each folder that you want to exclude.

Just uninstall Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)- it'll give you the option to uninstall the database and the update files. Untick all the boxes, so you are ONLY uninstalling WSUS and not the database or the update files. Finish the uninstall then reinstall. This time don't select the Replica mode. It will remember all your settings.

# re: Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) "Restart Later" button grayed out

I have say that the decision to not allow users to "Restart Later" with Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) was a big mistake. It made some sense in Software Update Services because once the button had been clicked then the dialog didn't come back. But with the re-prompt in WSUS it makes SO much sense to allow users to choose to restart later if they wish, knowing that they should get bored of getting prompted eventually. The workaround of elevating them is a lousy one, because it also gives them the option to decline updates. The most amazing thing is that I constantly hear that this behaviour was put in place because users shouldn't be given a choice about installing updates. Yet the workaround gives them to rights to decline updates, which is far worse. And we've found that since users can't click the "Later" button that they simply drag the dialog off screen. So that hasn't really helped at all, has it? Come on, give us the choice to enable this - seems that we should at least be free to choose for ourselves what our users should be able to do.

# re: WSUS: SelfUpdate Tree is not working

great work. ever since i had installed exchange 2k3 sp2, this has been an issue. the 'update services' service would stop after only a minute or so. the cause is that exchange sp2 reset the permissions on the website on port 80 (OWA) so I had to reset the perms to get OWA working again. once I reset the perms on the selfupdate virtual folder, the service stays running now! woohoo!!
thanks everyone

# re: WSUS: SelfUpdate Tree is not working

Nice post, one of many that actually addresses the issue properly.

I think it's insane though that you have to have WSUS listening on port 80. I installed WSUS in its own site as I've locked down my default website. Now I have to have something listening on both my internal and external IP's on port 80.

I have had to only allow a certain range of IP's to access the virtual directory.

Now when I follow the instructions, I am failing to get the Scheduled task for a CMD prompt to work (at all) not sure what to do.
When I tried this manually in cmd prompt, the first execution of the file worked, the second I am uncertain. Nevertheless, when I browsed to the web page for the rollup, it is 404'd. Any insight, thoughts or help, direction to a good blog about installation for this. I cannot seem to follow the limited instructions given on the README.txt

# re: Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) "Restart Later" button grayed out

you can force the machine to restart after a wsus update download/install. in the gp object the "No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Updates installations" setting controls this. # re: WSUS: SelfUpdate Tree is not working

If you're running SharePoint on port 80 on the same server then you'll need to exclude the /SelfUpdate path from its control:

stsadm -o addpath -url http://127.0.0.1/SelfUpdate -type exclusion

(stsadm can be found in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\60\BIN)

The worst thing is that because of the "grayed out" "RESTART LATER" button the "REBOOT" button is the only one active (focus !!!). If somebody is typing on the keyboard in professional machine writing such as a secretary reading from here notes beside the computer it can happen that during the typing the WSUS dialog pops up. # re: WSUS and SQL Server 2005

Not a single problem running WSUS on SQL 2005 Express. Just after installation there was performance issue with refreshing list of updates, I had to apply a patch (SQL script) to change index on one table. It was taking WSUS 2-3 minutes to refresh the list, now it's 2-3 seconds. All my various W2K/XP/2003/2003 64-bit machines get updated successfully.

I've had numerous other problems with upgrading from SUS server, migrating content and approvals, configuring Windows Update group policies, upgrading clients, making sure i have selfupdate virt dir on port 80 (main WSUS admin site runs on a custom port) etc.
Otherwise WSUS 2.0 is a pretty decent patch management tool (could be better of course, especially on the client side)

SQL 2005 Express was the smallest of problems really.

Best regards,
-p

Hope this makes sense.

[Reducing the complexity around approving for detection:
Basically in 3.0 the whole notion of approved for detection goes away - so we'll always have stats on which updates are needed etc. This allows us to build views where you can see which updates are unapproved & needed by clients which should help make it simpler to decide which updates to test 1st.]

Does this effectively mean that the 'Not Approved' status will disappear too, leaving just 'Install' and (presumably) a new 'Don't Install' as the only approval options? I hope, in that case, that the in-place upgrade from 2.0 to 3.0 will automagically change 'Not Approved' to be 'Don't Install'? :)

# re: What can you expect in WSUS 3.0?

1) It would be nice if there is a way to find the directory and filename of an update (in case we want to get the file and install it manually).

2)The superseded updates should be automatically and hierarchically get declined or not approved (which will mark them for deletion) after the superseding update gets approved for installation.

# re: MOM Warning Alert: AD Replication is occurring slowly

I think investigation on the destination DC is recommended. Initial DC updates can take long and can be safely ignored. But, when running in a small environment AD replication should be done within 10 minutes, even over a WAN.
Investigating the destination DC could give more insight on what's up than only checking the originating DC.
Things to do at the destination DC:
* Network : Check if RPC calls are arriving at the WAN site 100% without errors.
* Look for Event 1862 events in the Directory Service log
* Run dcdiag or
* Run repadmin /showvector /latency <partition-dn> for latency information.
Good luck!

# re: Storing WSUS Content on a SAN

Hi,
We've just got WSUS deployment talking to our Netapp SAN over IScsi - system on local server C:, content on SAN. Whilst I realise this takes us out 'supported' configuration, but then everything we do ends up like this as MS are not flexible enough for complex enterprises, it does work. Unfortunately, its down to your SAN hardware/software whether you'll be able to apply the "Network Service" permissions to the drive, but ours does. Performance has been excellent.

# re: What can you expect in WSUS 3.0?

More reboot options required for mobile users. When they connect to WSUS after a patch deadline has passed, the download, installation & reboot time is undeterministic - which means the user can be reboot while he least expects it losing his work. At least the max 30min countdown period should be increased.

Hi, If I want to delete updates that are actually declined on my wsus server from the hard drive I have only got to stop the Windows Server Update Services website and run WsusDebugTool.exe /Tool:PurgeUnneededFiles ?

Do I also have to run the other 3 commands ?

Note: My wsus is running with sql server 2k.

For example: I have downloaded many drivers when I installed the wsus server and now I don't need them any more; If my understanding is correct I first have to decline these updates, stop the service in IIS and run WsusDebugTool.exe /Tool:PurgeUnneededFiles on the server ?

# re: What can you expect in WSUS 3.0?

In regards to:

>Mandatory Updates
>>This exists in the final version. When >>approving an update for installation, a date >>deadline can be specified, after which the >>client cannot reject the update.

I believe that this doesn't accurately resolve the problem.

When establishing installation deadlines, it overrides all other settings and forces a reboot of the workstation if necessary.

Mandatory updates are different - what is needed is a way to prevent the end-user from "unchecking" updates to be installed *WITHOUT* establishing a deadline, which would do things like reboot the workstations with unsaved work or production servers!

Deadlines are of minimal use - I quickly learned to avoid them in WSUS. We desperately need a *real* Windows policy enforcement option to prevent users from thinking "they know better" than the IT security staff.

# re: Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) "Restart Later" button grayed out

Hi guys,

Well, we have a similar problem. Updates managed by group policy in our AD are:

1. Download and Install at 2am each day

2. Allow Non-Admins to receive notifications.

Other notable settings via script and Wake On Lan:

1. Turn on PC at 1:30am

2. Restart PC at 5:00am

All users in our environment are part of a PC Administrators group, which is added to the Local PC Administrators group on each computer.

With these settings, I would have expected the user to get a message. This is correct...for Windows XP, but not for Windows 2000. Non-Admin users on a Win2K pc do not get a notification to install updates.

Why are we doing it this way? To accommodate for laptop users whose laptops will be off the network.

So, when an update is available for an XP user who is using a laptop, they will be notified that updates are ready to be installed.

Why doesn't this work for Windows 2000???

Regards

Craig

It is 411 characters long and is actually used as a URL on an official web site. Many of the compeitiors are specifically designed to be as long as possible, which in my opinion should not count.

What the link is about? It refers to some Swedish rules about public daycare.

# re: WSUS Reporting Rollup Tool Sample

# re: What can you expect in WSUS 3.0?

Ever since I've become aware of the SUS/WSUS program I've been asking for two very simple things. Office 2K and Load-From-Disk Support.

Can we please get Office 2K support? Office 2K is used heavily throughout the Government and Commercial world, even though it is old.

The ability to load patches off of a removeable disk would be extremely useful. I'm on a network with a maximum bidirectional data rate of 32 kilobits a second. I routinely see ping times of close to 1000ms. A large sevice pack can take WEEKS to download.

I've found a tool (OHotFix) that is a stop gap, but it'd be more useful to see it integrated into WSUS.

Thanks,

SeaGROL

# re: How do I change the WSUS Server to the Replica Mode??

The script worked well for us, had to place quotes around the pathname to OSQL.exe, then it worked well.

I also found that all of our WSUS installs used the default database naming, so I replaced the %1 with %COMPUTERNAME%\WSUS and now it's a clickable batchfile.

Since we had to move ~20 clients to standalone mode, this will be a huge timesaver for us.

Thanks!

Have a look at User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Update. If the option "Remove access to use all Windows Update is set to Enabled then the fix described here will not work. Setting the option to disabled seems to get rid of the nag screen altogether and replaces it with the shield icon in the taskbar with the popups that you normally see on vanilla desktops.
