Troubleshooting Error 0x80072efd

In this Article, I will explain how to troubleshoot Error 0x80072efd. You may see this error on SUS Server in Synchronization Log as well as on the client in C:\Windows\Windows Update.log or C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log(without space)

Error Description: This error means "cannot connect to the Internet server" or "The attempt to connect to the server failed". You may see this error on Automatic Update Client or on the SUS Server itself while synchronizing with Microsoft Update Server.

Resolution:

I have found a workaround to troubleshoot this error. Let’s see the procedure for;

  • Resolving at the Client Side.
  • Resolving at the Server Side.

Resolving at the Client Side:

If you look in Windows Update.log, you will see the error;

---------------------------------------------------------

To resolve this,

(1) In your computer's Local Area Network (LAN) settings, the automatically detect settings check box is NOT selected.

(2) Bypass WSUS SERVER from IE Tools-Internet Options-Connections-LAN settings-Advanced and add IP Address of your SUS Server.

(3) Use IP ADDRESS instead of FQDN like http://hostname.domainname.com while you configure WSUS Server from the GPO.

(4) Run Win HTTP Proxy Configuration utility (PROXYCFG.EXE) from Command Prompt to see Bypass List (WinHttpSettings). After you run proxycfg.exe you need to restart Automatic Updates Services.

proxycfg -d
This command specifies that all HTTP and HTTPS servers should be accessed directly. Use this command if there is no proxy server.

proxycfg -p proxy-server-list optional-bypass-list
This command specifies one or more proxy servers, and an optional list of hosts that should be accessed directly. If a proxy server is not specified for a given protocol and that server is not in the bypass list, the -p option specifies that the server cannot be accessed at all.

proxycfg -d -p proxy-server-list optional-bypass-list
This command specifies one or more proxy servers, and an optional list of hosts that should be accessed directly. If a proxy server is not specified for the given protocol, the -d option specifies that the server should be accessed directly instead.

proxycfg -u
This command imports the Internet Explorer proxy settings of the current user. WinHTTP does not support auto-discovery and configuration script-based proxy settings.

Well, in some cases the situation is even worse; the clients do not have proxy server in their environment and even then this error is logged in Windows Update.log... then why does this happen...???!!!

When the Operating System is installed, you will have default settings with automatically detect settings checked without proxy server. These default settings appear to apply to the local system account & have priority. To resolve this, you may try deleting offending registry values from;

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections - "DefaultConnectionSettings"

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections - "SavedLegacySettings"

Now, restart the client and try to force the update detection.

PS: Backup your registry before you do this step.

Resolving at the Server Side:

On your SUSServer, in the synchronization log, you see this while error as shown below;

---------------------------------------------------------
Manual Sync Started- Wednesday, February 16, 2005 2:09:00
PM Failed
Updates Added:
 None
Updates Removed:
 None
Reissued Update(s):
 None

Error 0x80072EFD: Unable to connect to the server)
Sync Finished-Wednesday, February 16, 2005 2:10:29 PM

---------------------------------------------------------

And, the sync fails. To resolve this, add the following websites to the Trusted Zone from IE Tools Options.

Restart the server and try to update again.
